Take me to Tahiti.
French Polynesia receives only a tiny fraction of tourism as compared to Hawaii, leaving this chain of islands unspoiled and secluded. Relaxation is an important element in your honeymoon to Tahiti, and you'll find plenty to experience as well. There are great diving and snorkeling opportunities, and plenty to do if you like to rent a bike to explore the island for a day. Tahitian culture is intoxicating, and you'll find yourself at home on these islands. Tahiti is only 7 1/2 hours away from Los Angeles and can easily combine with an Asian or Australian destination for a longer honeymoon if you desire.
The island of Tahiti is the largest of 118 islands and atolls in French Polynesia. These islands are divided into 5 island groups. Tahiti belongs to the Society Islands, which also includes nearby Moorea and Bora Bora.
While French and Tahitian are the official languages, you'll find English spoken at all the resorts and tourist locations. Weather is perfect year-round, though rain occurs more frequently in the January-March timeframe.
The most distinctive accommodations in Tahiti are unquestionably the overwater bungalows (shown at right). You can opt for canoe breakfast delivery each morning, lounge about enjoying the rhythmic sounds of the ocean, or delight at the views of the fish from your room. Bungalows are thatched roofs and feature traditional Tahitian details.
Overwater bungalows are among the most expensive accommodations options, and couples may elect to stay in an overwater bungalow for only a portion of their stay. Less expensive accommodations include categories such as beach or garden bungalows, lagoonview rooms, and gardenview rooms.
Island Hopping: It's tough to pick out just one island to visit, which makes the honeymoon style of "island hopping" so popular. Two island itinerary combinations are popular for 7-night stays, and three island itineraries are popular for 10 or more nights. Of course, you can see many more islands cruising!
Cruise Tahiti: Cruising is an excellent way to see and experience the islands. Paul Gauguin Cruises offers an elegant, luxurious ship sailing Tahitian waters year-round. Private and shared yachts are for hire out of Raitea for 3 to 7-day itineraries. Mainstream cruise lines will offer, from time to time, a cruise itinerary that stops en route in the South Pacific.
The main island is smaller than Moorea's, but her lagoon -- in one word, wow! Many of the resorts sit on motus ("little islands") allowing for breathtaking views of the lagoon and Bora Bora's main island. This is also the home of some of the most exclusive resorts in the South Pacific. The iconic Mt. Otemanu sits majestically in the lagoon center.
The largest of the islands, Tahiti is the cultural and population center of French Polynesia. Papeete is the capital city, and also the international gateway, so you'll fly in here. An overnite stay may be required due to flight schedules. The best shopping is to be found here, as well as an array of restaurants and activities.
Lush and enticing, Moorea's peaks invite you to hike. That is, if you ever want to leave the pristine beach. Moorea is easily accessible, being close to Tahiti. However, Moorea's population is a mere 9,000. There are some excellent lodging options, from budget to indulgent, many with overwater bungalows.
