Mexico, Live It to Believe It
Cancun Beach Mexico sits on a barrier island in the shape of a 7, surrounded on three sides by water. The Caribbean waters are a stunning blue, and the beaches are that sort of soft, silky, sugary-white sand that you simply must run your toes through. Cancun is perhaps Mexico's most visited tourist destination and flights operate frequently, making it an easy jaunt from most US cities. Many resorts here are all-inclusive, and there are plenty of American-branded restaurants as well.
The island of Cancun is often referred to as the Hotel Zone, which is different from the interior city of Cancun and the areas north and south of Cancun. The Hotel Zone offers sandy white beaches, a row of resorts and hotels, shopping, restaurants, and nightlife. Cancun appeals to adults and families, and you’ll want to be sure to pick the right resort to fit your style.
To the north of Cancun Beach is the newly developed Costa Mujeres area. The small resort island of Isla Mujeres sits just off the coast with easy ferry access. There are resorts along the Costa Mujeres beachfront ranging from small to large, and most offer an all-inclusive concept. On Isla Mujeres there are small boutique hotels and accommodations that are quiet and laid back.
Just south of Cancun is the area of Riviera Cancun. The resorts here are more spread out than the ones in the Hotel Zone. And as you drive south, Riviera Cancun gives way to Riviera Maya.
If on an extended stay in Cancun, you can explore nearby regions of the Yucatan, including the Mayan ruins Chichen Itza (north) or Tulum (south). Or dive in an underground river called a Cenote in the Riviera Maya area. Diving and snorkeling are exceptional, and there are plenty of watersports to keep you busy.
Weather is mild and tropical year-round, with best values for travel between May and early December.
What to do
How to get there: Cancun, Mexico, is located on the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.
By air: Cancun International Airport CUN handles the second largest volume of traffic in Mexico but receives the highest score for its modern facilities and equipment. Multiple flights daily from major airports in the US, Canada, Europe, South America, and Mexico.
By sea: There are three major cruise ports that are in the general area: Cozumel, Progresso, and Costa Maya. However, none of these are close enough to visit Cancun during your stop.
